The Space Mindset: Leadership in an Era of Converging Systems Shelli Brunswick Some periods in history unfold gradually. Others arrive with such velocity that established frameworks struggle to keep pace. We are living in the latter. Artificial intelligence is reshaping industries faster than governance frameworks can adapt. Space-based infrastructure now underpins communications, navigation, financial transactions, and climate intelligence. Renewable energy, biotechnology, advanced computing, and digital finance are transforming how modern economies operate. In this environment, leadership cannot remain confined within traditional boundaries. Economic systems, technology, national policies, and supply chains are now deeply interconnected. Leaders operate within complex, interdependent systems, not isolated industries. Many leadership models were built for a different era—one with slower technological cycles, clear boundaries, and predictable influence. These models prioritize specialization and short-term optimization—approaches that worked when systems moved independently. Today’s reality is different. We are entering an era of converging systems. Innovation, governance, capital, and talent now interact across borders and sectors. Leaders who thrive will not simply be experts in one discipline. They will see how systems interact and evolve. The Perspective Shift: The Space Mindset The Space Mindset is not about rockets. It is about perspective—the discipline of stepping back from immediate pressures to understand the interconnected forces that shape outcomes. Leaders who elevate their perspective see patterns, relations- hips, and long-term consequences—not just isolated events. I found inspiration for this mindset early in my career, serving in the United States Air Force’s space acquisition. Space operations are highly integrated.
