Impact, Sustainability & the Living Planet
“ We don’t have to accept the way things are — we can change things for the better. ”
Kamil: Impact travel is growing rapidly, yet not all of it is authentic. How can conscious leaders distinguish between genuine conservation partnerships and sophisticated greenwashing? Duncan: Study the details, ask questions and challenge. Set criteria for one’s own engagement, as JWP does: https:// journeyswithpurpose.org/hosted-journeys/. Kamil: In a time of climate anxiety and ecological instability, what genuinely gives you optimism about the future of biodiversity restoration and rewilding? Duncan: Taking action. As Edward Abbey said, “Sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul,” and I see a growing movement of people who have had enough of the wilful destruction of our natural world and demand a different path. Kamil: If you could influence one systemic shift in how global capital flows into conservation over the next decade, what would it be — and why is that shift urgent now? Duncan: Fundamentally, I believe that we need to reshape what success for human beings looks and feels like in society, and therein our human expectations and behaviours. My underlying philosophy is that our wellbeing is the sum of the parts of our positive relationships — with ourselves, those around us, and our natural world. Focus on positive relationships: ourselves, our human connections and our natural-world kin. The right actions then flow.
