interview

Interview by Kamil Grund Michael Samen

Kamil: Your performances blur the line between illusion and psychology — where do you personally draw that boundary, and do you think audiences want to believe in something beyond logic? Michael: The beauty of mentalism is that it doesn’t require a surrender of logic. There is no mysticism or magic here. Yet, the experience remains entirely inexplicable. Today, as hyper-rationality and the cold certainty of data points shape our era, there is a profound, almost primal hunger for the inexplicable. My audience doesn’t necessarily want to abandon their logic; rather, they want to be reminded that logic has not yet fully mapped the vast terrain of the human experience. Even the most analytical minds want to remember what it feels like to be genuinely surprised by the hidden capacities of their own consciousness. I don’t ask people to believe in the impossible, I just show them how much of the possible we still don’t understand. Kamil: You often speak about reading micro-expressions and subtle human signals — how can business leaders or entrepreneurs apply these skills to improve decision- making and influence? Michael: We are all born with a baseline “fluency” in non-verbal communication, but most of us let that literacy atrophy while we constantly develop our other communication skills. For a CEO, developing an understanding of non-verbal communication isn’t about the parlor trick of becoming a “human lie detector.” It is about increasing situational awareness. In high-stakes environments, the most valuable data is written in the room. By noticing a micro-hesitation during a negotiation or a subtle shift in posture during a pitch, you gain access to the “data that isn’t on the page.” This literacy allows you to negotiate with a higher degree of empathy and respond to the unspoken half of the conversation. Kamil: In a world dominated by AI and data, do you believe human intuition is becoming more valuable or less relevant — and why? Michael: Exponentially more valuable. As technology commoditizes logic and technical execution, the “human premium” shifts to the areas AI cannot touch: nuance, moral judgment, and intuition. Intuition is the “last mile” of leadership. AI can process information at extraordinary speed, but it can’t sit in a room and feel when the energy shifts or when a partner is wavering. When the data is 50/50, it is refined perception that tips the scale. We are moving into an era where the most valuable assets are the most human ones.
